Posted 01/05/2009 : S1 Suttonlink hits the road

Central Buses launched a brand new bus route in the Sutton Coldfield area on Monday 27 April 2009. Numbered the S1, the service will link Sutton Coldfield and Erdington with Mere Green, Streetly, Hundred Acre, Kingstanding, New Oscott and Wylde Green, operating every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday. The service will be launched with refurbished, low floor vehicles which also boast CCTV and flat screen monitors displaying local news and information. The service replaces bus routes 118 (Streetly – Erdington) and 196 (Streetly – Sutton Coldfield), which until now had only been served on an hourly basis.

Geoff Cross, managing director of Central Buses said "The improvements have been made in response to public demand and we trust that passengers will benefit with the longer hours of operation and a more frequent service. The new service offers new transport links without the requirement for passengers having to change buses to get to there destination. The overall investment that has been made in the service will no doubt elevate the quality of public transport for the people of Sutton Coldfield."

In order to offer greater value for money in the current financial climate, lower fares have also been introduced on the service. An all day ticket costs a mere £2.50 and more regular travels can take advantage of a 7 and 28 day tickets which cost £9.50 and £30.00 respectively (half fare for children). Family tickets are available for just £6.00 per day and cover up to two adults and four children.

Cllr Gary Clarke, Chairman of Centro and Conservative councillor for Streetly, said: “We welcome this move by Central Buses. Not only will it reduce the cost on the public purse but it will also bring major benefits for passengers living and working in this area and should help attract more people onto public transport.”
